Flemish Technique

I have started studying the Flemish technique (nothing formal, but reading up on my own).  Basically, you start with a drawing, add a canvas toning layer (imprimatura), an umber layer (or two) to get the tonal qualities right, a dead layer (black and white), then add color.  Here are a few of the umber layers I have completed:

I have another umber coat to put on the Fleur De Lis.  I have also started the dead layer on the Vase with Cloth, which I will post (hopefully this weekend). The great thing about this technique is that it makes it much easier to caputre the nuances and subtlties. The bad thing is that it is a much slower process (about 4 weeks in between each layer of paint).

  1. Exquisite! The red rose, green pitcher, yellow pear and purple grapes against the white cloth and gray-to-black background form perfect primary colors and design. I love it.
